Collaborators

I worked with Habitat for Humanity Portland Region Staff; including the Volunteer Manager, Assistant Construction Superintendent (as an SME), and various construction site staff to execute this project. During the two video shoot days, I was assisted by a camera operator.

Challenges

Habitat for Humanity's labor model involves volunteer (unpaid) construction workers utilizing complex and potentially dangerous powered saws, including the Table Saw. Site Leads (Staff) often provide informal, nonstandardized training to volunteers on these tools. Finally, Habitat for Humanity Portland Region does not have a Learning Management System (LMS) with which to capture training completion data.

Solution

In order to overcome the lack of an LMS, the course generates a certificate of completion that the learner can download after passing the course. Also, the course opens an email template which notifies the appropriate Habitat for Humanity Staff Member of this completion.

The course introduces volunteers to important safety practices while operating a table saw on Habitat for Humanity build sites in a standardized manner.

Results

Initial feedback suggests that volunteers are more confident in knowing when and how to operate a table saw on Habitat for Humanity Portland Region Build Sites.
